What Documents Are Required?

Every UK university application needs a core set of documents, plus a few extra ones depending on your course and study level. This page sets out exactly what’s needed and when — not a generic list, but what genuinely varies by whether you’re applying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or a Pre-Sessional English course.

Required for Every Application

Two documents are required regardless of course or level:

• Passport copy — a clear copy of your valid passport photo page.
• Educational certificate — your most recent completed qualification (school-leaving certificate for undergraduate applicants, degree certificate for postgraduate applicants).

What’s Added by Study Level

Beyond the two universal documents above, what else you need depends on the level you’re applying for:

• Pre-Sessional / English Language courses — just the two universal documents above. No English proficiency evidence is required at this level, since the course itself is what builds your English.
• Bachelor’s degree — adds English proficiency evidence (IELTS or an accepted equivalent) and a Personal Statement.
• Master’s degree — adds English proficiency evidence, a Personal Statement, a CV/Résumé, and a Reference Letter.
• PhD / Research degree — adds everything required at Master’s level, plus a Research Proposal.

If this looks different from checklists you’ve seen elsewhere, it’s because CV/Résumé and Reference Letter are genuinely only required from Master’s level upward — not for every applicant. We built our own checklist around real UK admissions practice at each level, not a one-size-fits-all list.

A Note on Document Quality

A document being submitted isn’t the same as it being submitted well — scans should be clear and complete, certificates should match the name on your passport (or come with an explanation if they don’t), and anything not already in English should be accompanied by a certified translation.
