Undergraduate Admissions to UK Universities

A UK bachelor’s degree is three years for most subjects in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (four in Scotland, and for some subjects like engineering, medicine or courses with a placement/foundation year elsewhere) — shorter than the US four-year model, taught at research-active universities, and internationally recognised in employment and further study alike. How Undergraduate Admissions Actually Work

Most UK undergraduate places for standard three-year bachelor’s degrees are coordinated through UCAS, the UK’s centralised university admissions service, with a small number of fixed deadlines each year. Alongside that, many universities also run pathway and Foundation Year programmes — usually delivered by a partner college on or near campus — with their own direct application routes outside UCAS, aimed specifically at international students who need an extra preparatory year before starting a degree.

Which route applies to you depends on your qualifications and the course. StudyUKToday handles the actual submission either way, through our partner network — you complete one application with us, and we route it correctly rather than asking you to work out UCAS deadlines and pathway-college applications yourself.

Entry Requirements

Exact requirements are set by each university and course, but as a general guide:

• Academic qualifications — grades broadly equivalent to UK A-levels or the International Baccalaureate. Many national school-leaving qualifications (WAEC/NECO, CBSE/ICSE, national high school diplomas and others) are accepted directly for some courses, or via a Foundation Year where the direct equivalence isn’t recognised for a specific course.
• English language — most courses ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (higher for competitive courses and top-ranked universities), or an equivalent test (TOEFL, PTE Academic, or others a specific university accepts). • Supporting documents — passport, academic transcripts, and for some courses a personal statement, reference letter, or portfolio. The exact list for your course is confirmed once you start an application — see our full Document Checklist for what’s commonly needed.

The Application Process

1. Register with StudyUKToday — tell us your academic background and what you want to study.
2. Course and university selection — we help you shortlist realistic options based on your grades, budget, and goals, not just name recognition.
3. Document collection — upload your documents once; we tell you if anything’s missing or needs a better scan before it becomes a problem.
4. Submission — we prepare and submit your application through our partner network.
5. Offer — universities typically respond with a conditional or unconditional offer.
6. CAS and visa — once you accept an offer and meet any conditions, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), which you need to apply for your student visa. 7. Enrolment — you arrive, register with your university, and start your course.

International undergraduate tuition varies significantly by university and subject — classroom-based courses (Business, Humanities, Social Sciences) are generally at the lower end, laboratory and clinical courses (Sciences, Engineering, Medicine) at the higher end.
