How to Apply to a UK University

Prefer another way? Email us · Request a call

Applying to a UK university follows the same basic shape whatever you’re studying — choose a course, get your documents in order, submit, and respond to your offer — but the specific route and requirements differ by study level. This page is the general map; for the full detail on your specific level, see Undergraduate Admissions, Postgraduate Admissions, or PhD & Research Admissions.

The General Shape of an Application

  1. Register with StudyUKToday and tell us your academic background and what you want to study.
  2. Course and university selection — we help you shortlist realistic options based on your grades, budget, and goals.
  3. Document collection — see our Document Checklist for exactly what’s needed at your study level.
  4. Submission — through UCAS for standard undergraduate courses, or direct application for most postgraduate courses.
  5. Offer — universities respond with a conditional or unconditional offer.
  6. CAS and visa — once you accept an offer and meet any conditions, the university issues a CAS, which you need for your student visa. See GOV.UK for current, authoritative visa requirements.
  7. Enrolment.

Undergraduate vs Postgraduate: What Actually Differs

Undergraduate applications for standard three-year bachelor’s degrees mostly go through UCAS, a centralised system with fixed deadlines. Postgraduate (Master’s and PhD) applications are generally made directly to each university, with no centralised system and rolling deadlines that vary by institution — meaning the timing pressure and process are genuinely different, not just a smaller version of the undergraduate route.

Not Sure You Meet Direct Entry Requirements?

A Foundation Programme bridges the gap between your current qualifications and direct entry — see our Foundation Programmes page. If English is the gap rather than academic qualifications, a Pre-Sessional English course is the equivalent route on the language side.
