English Language Programmes for UK University Entry

If you haven’t yet reached the English score your target course requires — or haven’t taken a test at all — a university-attached English Language Programme is usually the most direct route in, and often results in a conditional offer that no longer depends on retaking IELTS.

Pre-sessional vs. General English Programmes

• Pre-sessional English — a short, intensive course (typically a few weeks to a few months) run immediately before the start of term, specifically for students who already hold a conditional offer and need to reach the required score. Many universities issue offers on the basis that successfully completing pre-sessional English at a required grade satisfies the language condition — no separate IELTS retake needed.
• General English Programmes — longer, standalone courses (a term or more) for students starting further from the required level, not yet tied to a specific conditional offer.
