A UK PhD typically takes three to four years and is almost entirely research-led — there’s little or no taught coursework, and the degree is awarded on the strength of a thesis, defended in a final oral examination (the viva). This makes doctoral admissions genuinely different from undergraduate or master’s applications, and it’s worth understanding that difference before you start.

What Makes PhD Admissions Different

Before you can formally apply, you generally need a research proposal — a clear, well-argued outline of what you want to investigate and why — and in many subjects, you need to identify a potential supervisor whose own research interests align with yours, and make initial contact before applying. Universities admit PhD candidates into a specific research area with a named supervisor, not into a general programme the way undergraduate courses work. Entry Requirements

• A relevant master’s degree (or, occasionally, an outstanding bachelor’s degree with research experience, for some departments).
• A research proposal — its length and format vary by department, and we can advise on what a specific university expects.
• English language proficiency, usually IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall, sometimes with no component below 6.0.
• CV and academic references, and for some subjects, a writing sample or evidence of prior research (a dissertation, publication, or conference presentation).

Funding
