How Foundation Programmes Work

Most Foundation Programmes are delivered by a dedicated pathway college, often on or near the university campus, in partnership with the university itself. Successfully completing the Foundation year — usually to a specified grade — typically guarantees progression to the linked bachelor’s degree, without a separate application. The year itself combines subject-specific academic preparation (matched to your intended degree — Science, Business, Engineering, etc.) with continued English language development where needed.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for a Foundation Programme are lower than for direct entry to the degree itself — that’s the point of the route. Typically:

• Completed secondary education, without needing the specific subject match direct entry would require.
• English language around IELTS 5.5–6.0 overall (lower than direct-entry requirements, since the programme itself builds English further).
